My Background

I am a Denver based painter who is largely self taught. I always loved drawing and took art classes all through high school, but my interests branched out. My degrees are in anything but art, and painting is the only class I ever failed. It could also be said that I dropped out of science school. :-)

After college I picked up a lot of graphic arts jobs (including design, printing, and framing) before I picked up a paintbrush again and fell in love with oil painting. I like to play in various mediums and push my own boundaries.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, I started painting almost 20 years ago but only began in earnest when I got my first studio space at 400 W Rich St in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus. I learned a lot from my fellow artists there. I like to think of these few years as an unofficial residency.

I often work at the confluence of information and imagery. I seek beauty or poignancy in things people might ordinarily look away from. A common theme is the juxtaposition of the individual with others and their relationships with the changing world around them.

I've heard people say that my work is political. While politics are certainly an inescapable part of the modern world, I would say instead that my most poignant works are societal. I see society and culture as dynamic, the engagement in which is universal to humanity, even though the shape of things varies from culture to culture they are always changing, even tradition is never truly fixed, and often in imperceptible ways. Most often, the history we get focuses on people who do notable things. Perhaps that is fair, but I think that these dynamics are shaped just as much (or more) from the bottom-up, by people you may never hear of, doing things you might never know... below the threshold of our understanding.
